President-elect Donald Trump has made a bold pledge to address what he calls “transgender lunacy,” signaling a hardline approach to LGBTQ policies as he prepares to assume office.
Speaking at the AmericaFest conference in Phoenix, Arizona, Trump declared his intent to roll back transgender rights and restore what he described as traditional values in the United States.
The former president vowed to sign executive orders aimed at eliminating transgender inclusion in schools, the military, and women’s sports. He emphasized that his administration would officially recognize only two genders—male and female—at the federal level, a move that has sparked widespread controversy.
“I will sign executive orders to end child sexual mutilation, get transgender out of the military, and out of our elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools,” Trump stated during the event, drawing applause from his conservative audience. He also reiterated his promise to “keep men out of women’s sports,” a position he has championed throughout his campaign.
Trump’s remarks have been met with significant backlash from LGBTQ advocacy groups and human rights organizations, who view his stance as a threat to the rights and protections of transgender individuals. Critics argue that such policies would reverse years of progress and potentially harm marginalized communities. Advocacy groups have raised concerns about the impact these measures could have on transgender individuals, particularly children, in terms of access to education, healthcare, and equal opportunities.
The speech comes at a time when debates over transgender rights are intensifying across the United States. States governed by Democrats and Republicans have clashed over policies related to gender-affirming care, educational materials on transgender issues, and the inclusion of transgender athletes in sports. The issue has further escalated with Congress recently passing a defense budget that blocks funding for certain gender-affirming care for transgender children of military personnel.
In addition to addressing transgender issues, Trump used the platform to outline broader goals for his presidency. He criticized the current administration, blaming President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for what he described as four years of national decline. Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine, stabilize the Middle East, and prevent a potential World War III.
“On January 20, the United States will turn the page forever on four long, horrible years of failure, incompetence, and national decline,” Trump said, referring to his upcoming swearing-in. “We will inaugurate a new era of peace, prosperity, and national greatness.”
While Trump’s comments have energized his conservative base, they have also deepened divisions within the nation, reflecting the polarized views on transgender rights and broader social policies. As Trump prepares to assume office, the debate over his proposed measures is expected to dominate U.S. political discourse in the months ahead.
