A tragic incident was narrowly avoided on Christmas Day when five individuals were rescued from a multiple-vehicle accident involving two commercial buses at Iyana-Era, inward Agbara, along the Mile 2-Badagry Expressway in Lagos.
The Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the accident, attributing the cause to excessive speeding and brake failure by one of the buses.
According to Taofiq, preliminary investigations revealed that the T4 commercial bus, with registration number LSD 668 YE, was traveling at high speed towards Agbara when its braking system failed, leading to the collision.
In a swift and commendable response, LASTMA officials rescued five critically injured passengers, comprising three males and two females. The victims were immediately transported to Eva-Life Hospital near Iyana-Era for urgent medical care.
Security personnel from the Ijanikin Police Division provided vital support during the rescue operation, ensuring the safety of those involved and maintaining order at the scene.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sympathy for the injured passengers, wishing them a quick recovery. He used the opportunity to emphasize the need for regular vehicle maintenance, particularly the braking system, urging drivers to perform thorough checks before embarking on journeys within or outside Lagos State.
He added, “For any traffic-related concerns, the public is encouraged to contact LASTMA through its toll-free hotline: 080000527862.”
The incident highlights the ongoing need for road safety awareness and strict adherence to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.
