The Minister of State for Works, Mohammed Goronyo, has directed the Federal Emergency Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to compile a list of contractors who have failed to deliver on their road projects. This directive, aimed at ensuring accountability, was issued during Goronyo’s familiarization tour of FERMA’s South West region.
In a statement released by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mohammed Ahmed, the minister expressed frustration with contractors falling short of their commitments. Goronyo emphasized that delays and poor-quality work would no longer be tolerated.
“The era of abandoning projects is over,” Goronyo declared. “Contracts funded by taxpayers’ money must yield value, and there will be consequences for non-compliance.”
Accountability Measures
Goronyo ordered FERMA’s state coordinators to submit the list of defaulting contractors to headquarters within a week. He also proposed the establishment of a Technical Committee to monitor and evaluate the quality of projects across the country.
While acknowledging the challenges faced by FERMA, the minister insisted that these obstacles could be overcome through determination and teamwork. He encouraged FERMA staff to align with President **Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s** vision and work towards impactful outcomes.
“We have a President committed to confronting challenges without excuses. It is time for us to tighten our belts, support one another, and adopt a new approach,” he stated.
Unscheduled Inspections and Staff Welfare
To ensure compliance, Goronyo announced plans to conduct unscheduled visits to project sites. These inspections aim to assess the performance of contractors firsthand. Additionally, the minister pledged to prioritize staff welfare at FERMA to enhance productivity.
Community Development Projects
As part of his commitment to community development, Goronyo inaugurated a **solar-powered streetlight project** in the Isale-Eko community of Lagos State. Donated by FERMA, the initiative seeks to improve security and socio-economic conditions in the area.
The project aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with Goronyo urging residents to protect the streetlights from vandalism.
“This initiative demonstrates our dedication to improving the lives of Nigerians and addressing community challenges,” Goronyo remarked.
The Federal Government’s focus on infrastructure and accountability reflects its broader mission to drive national development and ensure that public funds are effectively utilized.
