President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing the persistent challenges affecting Nigeria’s power sector, promising sweeping reforms aimed at improving electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across the country.
Titansloaded reports that the President made the remarks while addressing stakeholders in the energy sector through the Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, stressing that the Federal Government is intensifying efforts to stabilise the nation’s electricity supply and resolve long-standing structural inefficiencies in the sector.
Tinubu acknowledged that Nigeria’s power problems did not develop overnight, noting that decades of underinvestment, poor maintenance culture, and infrastructural decay have contributed to the current electricity crisis. He, however, assured Nigerians that his administration is taking deliberate steps to reverse the trend.
According to him, ongoing reforms are designed to strengthen the entire electricity value chain, including generation companies, transmission infrastructure, and distribution networks. He added that the government is working to attract both local and foreign investments to boost capacity and improve reliability.
The President also highlighted the importance of collaboration among key stakeholders in the sector, including regulatory agencies, market operators, and development partners. He explained that such cooperation is necessary to build a more transparent, efficient, and financially viable electricity market.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, speaking on behalf of the President, noted that several reform initiatives are already underway. These include infrastructure upgrades, policy restructuring, and targeted investments aimed at reducing system losses and improving service delivery to consumers.
Tegbe further explained that the government is engaging international partners to support financing and technical assistance in order to accelerate reforms within the sector. He added that the ultimate goal is to ensure stable and affordable electricity supply for households, industries, and businesses across Nigeria.
Despite ongoing reforms, Nigeria continues to grapple with frequent power outages, weak transmission capacity, and liquidity challenges that have affected the efficiency of the electricity market for years. Many industries have also raised concerns about the high cost of alternative power generation, which continues to impact production costs and economic growth.
However, the administration insists that its reform agenda is structured to deliver long-term solutions rather than short-term fixes. It maintains that improvements will be gradual but sustainable, as foundational changes are being implemented across critical segments of the sector.
Tinubu reiterated that reliable electricity remains central to Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda, adding that industrial growth, job creation, and national productivity depend heavily on a stable power supply.
