The Rivers Elders and Leadership Forum has strongly criticised the impeachment proceedings initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu.
Titansloaded reports that the elders described the move as ill-timed, unnecessary, and lacking sufficient constitutional justification, warning that it could further destabilise the state’s fragile political environment.
In a statement issued on Friday, the forum said impeachment is a serious constitutional process that must be guided strictly by the rule of law and public interest, not political disagreements or personal ambitions.
The elders noted that Governor Siminalayi Fubara was elected through a democratic process and still enjoys the mandate of the people, stressing that such a mandate should not be undermined without clear and verifiable grounds.
They cautioned lawmakers against actions capable of deepening political divisions, urging the House of Assembly to prioritise governance, peace, and development over confrontation.
According to the forum, Rivers State is only beginning to regain political stability following months of tension, making the impeachment move a potential setback to reconciliation efforts.
The elders also expressed concern that continued legislative pressure on the executive arm could erode public confidence in democratic institutions and disrupt socio-economic activities in the state.
They called on political leaders and stakeholders to embrace dialogue as a more constructive means of resolving disagreements between the executive and legislative arms of government.
The forum appealed to the lawmakers to suspend the impeachment process and allow space for mediation, warning that prolonged political conflict would negatively affect citizens.
Civil society groups and community leaders have also voiced similar concerns, describing the impeachment attempt as politically motivated rather than driven by governance failures.
Observers say the situation has heightened political tension across Rivers State, with residents closely watching developments at the House of Assembly.
Despite growing calls for restraint, the Assembly has not officially announced a halt to the impeachment proceedings as of the time of reporting.
The elders reaffirmed their commitment to protecting democratic values, peace, and stability in Rivers State, vowing to continue engaging relevant authorities.
They urged all parties to act with maturity and responsibility in the interest of the state’s future.
Political analysts warn that unresolved tensions could distract the government from delivering essential services to residents.
The unfolding situation remains a key political issue in Rivers State as stakeholders push for calm and lawful resolution.
