The Lagos State House of Assembly has explained the rationale behind the impeachment of its former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, citing allegations of misconduct, highhandedness, and ineffective leadership.
Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015, was removed during Monday’s plenary session after a motion was moved under the Matter of Urgent Public Importance by Femi Saheed, a member of the Assembly.
In a historic move, the lawmakers elected Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, as the new Speaker. Her appointment marks a significant milestone, as she becomes the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos Assembly.
The Assembly stated that Obasa’s impeachment was necessary to uphold the integrity and sanctity of the legislative body, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and effective governance.
This change in leadership represents a pivotal moment in Lagos State politics, as the Assembly looks to reposition itself under Mojisola Meranda’s stewardship, focusing on accountability and progressive reforms.
