Veteran Nollywood Actress Jumoke George Reveals 14-Year Absence Due to Refusal to Engage in Sex-for-Roles
In a candid interview on Oyinmomo TV, veteran Nollywood actress Jumoke George opened up about her 14-year absence from the film industry, attributing it largely to her refusal to exchange sexual favors for acting roles. The actress, who has recently made her return to the screen, discussed the pressures and discrimination she faced, particularly due to her dark skin tone.
Jumoke revealed that she often encountered criticism from movie directors regarding her complexion. “They suggested I bleach my skin,” she stated. The actress emphasized that her commitment to maintaining her natural beauty contributed significantly to her prolonged hiatus. “You cannot push me into something I do not want to do. I will glow with this skin till old age, and don’t forget, black does not crack,” she asserted.
Moreover, Jumoke recounted a distressing experience with a director who informed her she was being blacklisted for refusing to engage in sexual relationships with executives in the industry. “I started having issues with getting roles when the executives wanted a relationship in exchange for it. The pressure was immense, with more than 20 to 30 people involved,” she explained.
The actress described a particular incident where she confronted a director at Feminine Cafe at LTV 8, seeking clarity on her lack of roles. The director candidly revealed that her refusal to comply with their demands had led to her exclusion from casting opportunities. Overwhelmed with emotion, Jumoke recounted, “I just started crying and he walked out. When I got home, I prayed to God to take control.”
Despite the challenges she faced, Jumoke George remains steadfast in her belief that her talent and integrity should shine through, rather than compromising her values for success in the entertainment industry.
