In a candid interview on the Receipts podcast on Spotify, Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage opened up about the emotional toll her divorce from ex-husband Teebillz took on her, revealing how the public’s perception of her changed dramatically after the split.
Tiwa Savage , once celebrated as Nigeria’s sweetheart, shared that she was adored by fans for doing everything “by the books.” She recalled, “When I came out, I was Nigeria’s sweetheart when I started and I could do no wrong in Nigerians’ eyes. I did everything by the books, you know, I went to university, and I wasn’t a baby mama. I got married, then I had a baby, so I did everything in the right order and everybody loved me, and then everything happened.”
However, the 2018 divorce from Teebillz marked a turning point in her career and public image. According to Tiwa, after the split, she began receiving hate from blogs and certain people. She revealed, “Then I started getting hate from blogs and I started getting hate from certain people. And that’s how our situation happened. He actually announced it online. I didn’t break up with him, but I was the one being attacked.”
The media frenzy surrounding the divorce came at a particularly challenging time for the singer, as she was coping with postpartum depression and the changes to her body after giving birth. She admitted, “My baby was just a few months old, and I was dealing with postpartum, and my body wasn’t the same, and I was really depressed.”
Despite the adversity, Tiwa’s openness about her struggles highlights the intense pressure faced by public figures when their personal lives become the subject of public scrutiny.
