Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged the international community to defend Nigerians’ democratic rights ahead of the 2027 general elections rather than throw its support behind any political party or candidate.
Titiansloaded reports that Obi made the appeal during a meeting with the new British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Peter Vowles, and members of his team at the diplomat’s residence in Abuja on Thursday, November 5.
The former Anambra State governor said the discussion focused on governance, the welfare of Nigerians and preparations for the next general elections.

In a statement shared on his X account, Obi said he congratulated Vowles and the British people on the occasion of the birthday of King Charles III.
He explained that his message to the diplomat was centred on ensuring that Nigerians are allowed to determine their political future without interference or undue influence.
According to him, the international community should prioritise the protection of democratic principles rather than favouring any individual seeking political office or a particular party.
Obi also called on foreign partners to maintain their engagement with Nigeria by encouraging accountability and demanding credible electoral processes.

He stressed that elections must be free, fair, transparent and credible, adding that the choices of citizens should be respected.
The NDC candidate maintained that democracy should reflect the wishes and aspirations of the people, insisting that Nigerians must have the freedom to choose their leaders and decide the country’s future.
His appeal comes as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties and potential candidates positioning themselves for the contest.
