The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has described Nigeria’s democratic system as a source of stability in West Africa. He recently shared that Nigeria keeps upholding democratic principles through fair elections and peaceful transitions of power.
Speaking via a press statement by his spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, to celebrate Democracy Day, Yusuf said that by adhering to constitutional order, despite recent democratic setbacks across the nation, Nigeria has proven that it fully embraces democratic values.
He revealed that the nation’s commitment to electoral accountability, civic participation, and the rule of law has helped Nigeria preserve its internal stability.
Acknowledging that upholding democracy also projects Nigeria as a dependable democratic partner, Yusuf disclosed that the country’s democratic institutions may not be perfect, but they remain resilient.

“Nigeria stands as a beacon of hope and stability in the region.
Our democratic institutions may not be perfect, but they remain resilient.
In a time when democracy is under assault in parts of West Africa, Nigeria has continued to demonstrate that the rule of law, electoral accountability, and civic participation are essential pillars for long-term peace and development,” he said.
Citing Nigeria’s role in past peacekeeping missions and ECOWAS engagements, Yusuf mentioned that the country’s political health has majorly influenced the broader West African landscape.
He concluded by saying that democratic governance is not a domestic concern, but a vital part of regional stability.
“Democracy is not just an internal affair. It is our strategic contribution to regional peace. Our progress strengthens the African democratic project as a whole,” he added.
