A Nigerian motorist has alleged that police officers who initially detained him released him immediately after he mentioned the name of popular social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
Titansloaded reports that the incident has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians questioning why the mention of a celebrity or activist’s name would allegedly influence the conduct of law enforcement officers.
According to the motorist, he was stopped by police officers during a routine encounter and accused of committing a traffic-related offence. He claimed the officers attempted to intimidate him and allegedly demanded money before threatening to take him to the police station.
The motorist said the atmosphere changed after he informed the officers that he knew VeryDarkMan and would report the incident if necessary.
According to his account, the officers immediately became less confrontational and eventually allowed him to leave without collecting any money or proceeding with the alleged arrest.
A video of the encounter has since circulated across various social media platforms, attracting thousands of reactions from Nigerians.
Many social media users described the incident as another reflection of the long-standing concerns over alleged police extortion and abuse of power. Others argued that no Nigerian should require the influence of a public figure to receive fair and lawful treatment from security agencies.
The development has also reignited conversations about accountability within the Nigeria Police Force, with many citizens calling for stronger oversight and disciplinary measures against officers found engaging in misconduct.
The allegations come amid repeated assurances by the Nigeria Police Force that extortion, harassment and other forms of unprofessional conduct by officers will not be tolerated.
As of the time of filing this report, the police had not issued an official statement specifically responding to the motorist’s claim that he was released after mentioning VeryDarkMan’s name.
The authenticity of the motorist’s allegations has not been independently verified, and no disciplinary action relating to the incident had been announced by the authorities at the time this report was published.
