Cristiano Ronaldo has declared that Portugal’s triumph at the 2016 UEFA European Championship carries the same significance to him as winning the FIFA World Cup, describing the historic title as the greatest achievement of his international career.
Titansloaded reports that the Portuguese captain made the remarks following Portugal’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a Round of 16 defeat to Spain on Monday, bringing an end to what is expected to be his final appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
The 41-year-old football icon featured in his sixth FIFA World Cup in North America, hoping to add the prestigious trophy to an already remarkable career that has seen him win virtually every major honour at club level.
However, Portugal’s exit means Ronaldo’s long-standing quest to lift the World Cup has come to an end without success, leaving the coveted trophy as the only major title missing from his glittering collection.
Reflecting on his international career, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner insisted that Portugal’s victory at UEFA Euro 2016 remains just as meaningful to him as a World Cup triumph.
“I played 23 years in the national team and won three titles. Before Cristiano, Portugal had not won anything. The Euros was the most important. For me, 2016 has the same dimension as a World Cup, honestly,” Ronaldo said.
Portugal secured their first major international trophy at Euro 2016 after defeating host nation France 1-0 in the final following extra time, with Éder scoring the decisive goal in Paris.
The victory marked a watershed moment in Portuguese football history, ending decades of disappointment on the international stage and establishing Portugal among Europe’s elite football nations.
Although Ronaldo was forced off through injury during the final, he remained an inspirational figure on the touchline, passionately encouraging his teammates throughout the remainder of the match.
Speaking after Portugal’s exit from the 2026 World Cup, Ronaldo also admitted that he does not expect to feature at another FIFA World Cup, effectively signalling the end of his appearances at the tournament.
Despite that, the veteran forward stopped short of announcing his retirement from international football, insisting that he would carefully consider his future before making any decision.
“I won’t be making any rash decisions,” he said, leaving open the possibility of continuing with the Portuguese national team in other competitions.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, Ronaldo has enjoyed an extraordinary career spanning more than two decades.
The former Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus star has scored more than 950 career goals, won five UEFA Champions League titles, multiple domestic league championships in England, Spain and Italy, and numerous individual honours, including five Ballon d’Or awards.
He currently plays club football in Saudi Arabia, where he has continued to break scoring records while maintaining his status as one of the sport’s biggest global icons.
Despite his unparalleled achievements, the FIFA World Cup remains the only major trophy that eluded Ronaldo throughout his illustrious career.
The absence of the title has often featured prominently in comparisons with long-time rival Lionel Messi, who completed his football legacy by leading Argentina to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Nevertheless, Ronaldo maintains that Portugal’s historic Euro 2016 success represents the pinnacle of his international achievements and remains every bit as valuable to him as winning football’s most coveted prize.
