Popular singer Omawumi has said that Cobhams Asuquo played a pivotal role in her early career. She recently revealed that the music producer provided one of her first significant breaks outside Idols West Africa.
Speaking during an interview with HipTV, Omawuni shared that after she finished 2nd on the music reality show, Cobhams reached out to her for a collaboration.
According to her, she immediately accepted the offer and recorded the song, and it unexpectedly opened many doors for her.
She stated that their collaboration even extended to live performances, and she was allowed to open for P-Square in four locations in 2007.
“The first time we met, he just called. I knew we met on the show, and he said, ‘Omawunmi, this is Cobhams Asuquo—you know he likes to funkify his name. There is a song I want you to do. It might not come out as anything for now, but let’s just go with it.’
I did the song, and then the agency picked it. I became the brand ambassador for that product for two years,” she explained.

The “If You Ask Me” crooner further noted that beyond the platform and exposure Cobhams offered her, she absolutely cherished the mentorship she received from him.
Omawunmi concluded by saying that the producer’s guidance helped her refine her craft and navigate the music industry.
“Cobhams taught me a lot of nuances when it comes to delivery and posture,” she added.
