Benue State is once again grappling with violence after a devastating attack in Gwer East Local Government Area left at least nine people dead. Residents in the affected communities of Mbalom, Mbatsada, and Agana were caught in the deadly assault by suspected armed herdsmen between 5pm and 6pm on Friday.
Governor Hyacinth Alia described the attack as “barbaric and unacceptable,” assuring citizens that the perpetrators will face the full force of the law. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor extended condolences to the families of the victims and urged security agencies to intensify operations in the area.
“This is a direct threat to the peace of Benue State, and we will not tolerate such criminality,” Governor Alia said. He commended the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their prompt response, pledging sustained action to protect lives and property.
Local officials confirmed that warning signs had been issued prior to the attack, but the assailants were able to strike swiftly, leaving homes destroyed and residents traumatized. Gwer East Local Government Chairman, Timothy Adi, reported that security personnel are now deployed in the affected areas to restore order and prevent further casualties.
This attack adds to the growing pattern of violence in Benue State, a region already challenged by recurring herder-farmer conflicts. Analysts warn that without stronger intelligence, community policing, and rapid response systems, such attacks are likely to continue.
Residents and civil society groups are calling for immediate and decisive government action to safeguard vulnerable communities. Discussions around sustainable solutions for recurring violence, land use, and security reforms have intensified following the incident.
Governor Alia emphasized that justice will be served, vowing that all criminal networks threatening peace in Benue will be held accountable. The state has promised a strengthened security presence and continued monitoring to prevent future tragedies.
