The Sudanese government has expressed strong support for the recent U.S. sanctions imposed on Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, widely known as Hemedti, the leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). These sanctions come in response to the RSF’s involvement in acts of genocide during Sudan’s ongoing conflict.
In a formal statement, Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the necessity of coordinated international efforts to hold Hemedti and the RSF accountable for their actions. The ministry stated, “We welcome the U.S. government’s decisive action against Hemedti and urge the global community to implement similar measures to ensure justice for the victims of these heinous crimes.”
The U.S. sanctions, announced on January 7, 2025, freeze Hemedti’s assets and prohibit his entry into the United States. This move follows comprehensive investigations that determined the RSF’s responsibility for systematic violence against civilians, including sexual violence, leading to widespread displacement and loss of life.
International human rights organizations have documented numerous atrocities committed by the RSF since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023. Reports highlight targeted attacks on civilian populations, particularly in the Darfur region, where ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity have been reported.
The Sudanese government’s endorsement of the U.S. sanctions marks a significant stance against the RSF, signaling a commitment to addressing human rights violations within its borders. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its dedication to cooperating with international partners to restore peace and stability in Sudan.
As the situation develops, the global community will be observing Sudan’s internal dynamics and the international response to these sanctions. The collective actions taken are anticipated to influence the trajectory of Sudan’s path toward peace and justice.
