Popular evangelist and filmmaker Mike Bamiloye has defended the viral gospel hit “Never Going Back” by Gaise Baba and Lawrence Oyor. He recently shared that Christians should focus on the song’s message instead of the appearance of the artists.
Reacting via his social media page, Bamiloye said that rather than concentrating on the colourful hair, headbands, and vibrant dance moves displayed by singers in the music video, believers across the country should hold on to the message the track passes.
According to him, he appreciates how the lyrics of the song emphasized how Jesus Christ loved us enough to die on the cross, so he does not support getting distracted by what transpired in the music video.
Bamiloye reiterated the need to engage young Nigerian Christians with Gospel songs they can relate to, warning that consistent criticism will only push them towards songs by secular artists.
“The lyrics say: ‘Ife Jesu lo wa mi ri, to gbami ku o’ — ‘The love of Jesus sought me, found me, and died for me.’ That’s the gospel in Yoruba rhythm and sound!. Yet all some people can talk about is Gaise’s hair color and Lawrence’s headband. Really?” he wrote.

The evangelist concluded by saying that rather than criticize the singers for their lifestyle, Christians should join hands together to support Gospel compositions that speak to the current generation in their own rhythm.
“If they’re not listening to something like Never Going Back, they’ll be listening to something else—and let’s be honest, a lot of what’s out there isn’t helping them know Jesus.
Rather than criticize, let’s encourage. Let’s support gospel expressions that speak to this generation in their own rhythm,” he added.
