Nollywood actress and producer Laide Bakare has criticised the lack of appreciation for the entertainment industry by Nigerian politicians. The Senior Special Assistant to Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Entertainment, Arts, Culture and Tourism, recently revealed that entertainment remains an underutilised tool for economic growth.
Speaking during an interview with Saturday Beats, Laide said that Nigerian leaders’ undermining the role of entertainment in national development is a major problem affecting the country’s development.
According to her, she is presently using her role as special assistant to bridge the gap between entertainment and politics because she considers herself a trailblazer in the political space.

“We conducted our own research and discovered that the problem stems from those at the top. They tend to underrate the role of entertainment in national development. That is why we are coming up with fresh ideas and programmes to change that narrative.
I am a game changer, and I’m changing the game in politics. Entertainment should never be downplayed, especially given its economic value and the opportunities it presents,” she said.
Also speaking on the growth of Nollywood over the years, Bakare disclosed that she is very satisfied with the industry’s present state, and she feels very proud and fulfilled to be a part of the growth.
“It feels good and fulfilling. Years ago, when we were asked where we saw ourselves in five to eight years, this was the vision. It’s happening now, and I’m really thankful,” she added.
