Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has argued that Nigeria’s security crisis developed long before President Bola Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, stressing that the country’s present challenges are the result of years of unresolved problems.
Titiansloaded reports that Dogara made the remarks while addressing the 16th convocation ceremony of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, where he serves as Chancellor
He said terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and communal violence were already affecting the country before the current administration came into power.

“Insecurity in Nigeria did not begin with this administration. This is no excuse, because the facts need no defence. Terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and communal violence did not arrive in 2023,” he said.
According to Dogara, factors such as poorly secured borders, the spread of illegal firearms, youth unemployment and extremist ideologies had contributed to the persistence of insecurity over the years.
He maintained that acknowledging the history of the crisis should not be interpreted as excusing the government, but as recognising the long-term nature of the problem.

Dogara also noted that Tinubu had consistently identified national security as a major responsibility of his administration.
The former speaker congratulated the 836 students who graduated at the ceremony, saying Nigeria needed their talents, creativity and innovation to help address the country’s challenges.
