Benue Govt Dismantles Illegal Checkpoints, Warns Civil Protection Guards Against Misconduct
Titansloaded reports that the Benue State Government has intensified efforts to sanitize the state’s security architecture by dismantling illegal checkpoints and warning members of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards (BSCPG) against acts of misconduct, extortion, and abuse of authority.
The operation, carried out under the directive of the state government, targeted unauthorized roadblocks allegedly mounted by some members of the BSCPG across different parts of the state. Authorities said the move was aimed at restoring public confidence, improving security, and ending the harassment of motorists and commuters.
Leading the enforcement exercise, the Special Adviser to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Internal Security, Chief Joseph Har, emphasized that no security outfit or personnel has the legal authority to establish checkpoints without official approval from the appropriate authorities.
According to Har, the state government will not tolerate the illegal collection of money from road users or any form of intimidation carried out under the guise of security operations.
During the exercise, several members of the BSCPG were reportedly apprehended for allegedly operating unauthorized checkpoints and engaging in activities that violated the operational guidelines of the security outfit.
The Special Adviser stressed that the Benue State Civil Protection Guards were established to complement conventional security agencies in protecting lives and property, not to exploit residents or create unnecessary hardships for travelers.
He warned that any personnel found guilty of misconduct, extortion, harassment, or actions capable of bringing the government into disrepute would face strict disciplinary measures, including possible prosecution in accordance with the law.
Har further assured residents that the state government remains committed to strengthening security while ensuring that all security operatives conduct themselves professionally and within the limits of their responsibilities.
He disclosed that the crackdown on illegal checkpoints would continue across Benue State until every unauthorized roadblock is dismantled and offenders are brought to justice.
The government also urged members of the public to report illegal checkpoints, extortion, or any form of misconduct by security personnel to the relevant authorities, assuring citizens that Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration is determined to uphold accountability, protect human rights, and maintain law and order throughout the state.
The latest action forms part of the Benue State Government’s broader strategy to improve security coordination, eliminate illegal practices, and build greater public trust in the state’s security institutions.
