President Tinubu Defends NYSC Reforms, Says Changes Will Prepare Youths for Future Economy
Titansloaded reports that President Bola Tinubu has defended the Federal Government’s decision to approve sweeping reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), saying the changes are aimed at transforming the scheme into a modern institution that equips Nigerian graduates with practical skills for national development and economic growth.
The President explained that the reforms are designed to align the NYSC with Nigeria’s current socio-economic realities while preparing young graduates for careers in entrepreneurship, innovation, technology, and public service. According to him, the overhaul is part of his administration’s broader agenda to build a more productive workforce capable of driving the country’s ambition of becoming a $1 trillion economy.
The reforms, recently approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), represent the most significant restructuring of the NYSC since the scheme was established in 1973. Tinubu noted that the programme would shift from being largely ceremonial to becoming a skills-driven national service initiative that empowers graduates beyond their one-year mandatory service.
One of the key features of the reform is the transition of the NYSC into a civilian-led institution, while the military will continue to provide security support during orientation exercises and other operational activities where necessary.
The government also approved the digitalisation of the mobilisation and deployment process to improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability. Corps members will now be posted based on comprehensive security assessments to ensure their safety across the country.
As part of the new structure, the orientation programme will be expanded to six weeks, providing corps members with intensive training in civic responsibility, leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills, financial literacy, career development, and national values.
Another major highlight of the reform is the introduction of 11 specialised service streams, allowing corps members to serve in sectors that match their academic qualifications and career aspirations. The streams include Agriculture, Education, Health, Technology and Digital Innovation, Legal Services, Public Administration, Infrastructure Development, Green Economy, Enterprise Development, Creative Economy, and Paramilitary/Security.
The Federal Government believes the specialised streams will improve productivity and ensure graduates contribute more meaningfully to national development while acquiring practical experience relevant to their future careers.
The reforms also provide for the upgrading of orientation camp facilities through a national grading and certification system to improve living conditions and training environments for corps members nationwide.
In addition, the iconic NYSC uniform will be redesigned to reflect professionalism and modern standards, while the traditional Passing-Out Parade will be replaced with a graduation ceremony that recognises participants’ achievements throughout the service year.
President Tinubu has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development to commence the amendment of the NYSC Act and other relevant regulations to provide the necessary legal framework for implementing the approved reforms.
Government officials described the initiative as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s youth, expressing confidence that the changes will enhance employability, strengthen entrepreneurship, and position the NYSC as a more impactful institution for national development.
The administration maintains that the reforms will not only improve the welfare and safety of corps members but also ensure that graduates leave the scheme with practical skills capable of creating employment opportunities and contributing to Nigeria’s economic transformation.
