Newly promoted Serie A club Como 1907 has announced the appointment of former France international and Manchester United defender Raphaël Varane as a new member of their board. The club confirmed the news through an official statement on their website, marking the beginning of Varane’s post-playing career in football management.
Varane, who recently retired from professional football, is set to bring his vast experience and leadership qualities to his new role, supporting the club’s vision for growth both on and off the pitch.
In his new position, Varane will work closely with Osian Roberts, Como’s Head of Development, and Juliette Bolon, the club’s Head of Education Programs, to enhance youth development initiatives. His role will focus on integrating academic, leadership, and vocational training into the club’s youth programs, aiming to equip young players with the skills necessary for life beyond football. Varane’s involvement is expected to benefit not just the players but also the broader community through these educational efforts.
In addition to youth development, Varane will also provide strategic advice on Como’s product development, with a particular focus on incorporating technology and innovation. His input will guide improvements in digital solutions, data analysis platforms, and ticketing systems, helping to evolve the club’s fan engagement and operational strategies.
Mirwan Suwarso, a representative of Como 1907, expressed his excitement about the appointment: “We are pleased to welcome Raphaël to our board. His achievements in the game, combined with his interest in youth and education, align with our goals for Como 1907’s future. We are confident that his experience will contribute to the success of both our players and our community.”

Joining the board of Como allows me to continue contributing to the sport while shaping its future.”
He added, “This new phase of my career feels like a second birth, not an ending. I’m not saying goodbye to football. Joining the Como 1907 Development Committee excites me, and I look forward to being part of an ambitious project that resonates with my values. Together, we will invest in youth development, expand educational opportunities, and innovate product solutions to bring the club’s vision to life.”
