The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, following allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. The decision was made during a plenary session on Monday, where 32 out of 40 lawmakers voted in favor of his removal.
In a historic move, Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, was elected as the new Speaker, making her the first female to hold the position in the Assembly’s history.
The impeachment also led to significant changes within the Assembly. Clerk Olalekan Onafeko was suspended indefinitely, and all principal positions and standing committees were dissolved.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s spokesperson, Gboyega Akosile, clarified that the Governor was not involved in the impeachment process, describing it as strictly a legislative decision.
Meanwhile, All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Joe Igbokwe alleged that Obasa had been at odds with Governor Sanwo-Olu for years, hinting at longstanding tensions within the state government.
Mudashiru Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015, faced multiple accusations, including financial mismanagement and abuse of power. These allegations ultimately led to his removal, marking a significant shift in Lagos State’s political landscape.
With the election of Mojisola Meranda as Speaker, the Lagos State House of Assembly enters a new era, promising reforms and a fresh approach to governance.
