The National Youth Service Corps has urged corps employers to open movement and attendant registers in a bid to track performance in their places of primary assignments. The NYSC Gombe State Coordinator, Chinwe Nwachuku, recently revealed that corps members shouldn’t be given clearance letters if they don’t work.
Speaking at a one-day corps employer’s/ management workshop with the theme: Strengthening NYSC/Corps employer’s partnership for improved mutual benefits in Gombe State, Chinwe shared that such drastic measures are needed to guarantee quality service by the corpers.
“If a corps member didn’t work for you don’t give them clearance letter. We must have movement and attendant registers to monitor corps members,” she said.
Declaring the workshop open, Head of Gombe Civil Service, Ahmed Abdullahi, also urged corps employers to manage their relationship with the corps members well, while enhancing their welfare.
According to him, employers should learn to pay the corpers regular visits to ensure they feel appreciated for a job well done.
“Engage them in your various organisations. Even after providing them accommodations, visit them they will have a sense of belonging. The service is for a short period and beginning of your life,” he stated.

NYSC DG, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu further encouraged corps employers across the country to recommit to their statutory responsibilities, warning that increasing negligence is currently undermining the Scheme’s goals.
He concluded by saying that the yearly workshop remains a key platform for aligning perspectives, stressing that it will help reduce the growing cases of service evasion.
“Our inspection visits have revealed a concerning level of negligence. Many employers cannot account for the whereabouts of corps members, largely because they fail to provide them with proper accommodation.
This has led to an increase in indiscipline, service evasion, poor supervision, and rejection of corps members. These actions, if left unchecked, will continue to weaken the NYSC’s impact on national development.
This workshop is a patriotic call to action. It is an opportunity to work out measures that will strengthen the long-standing partnership between NYSC and corps employers, with a view to curbing both old and emerging negative trends in corps administration,” he added.
