Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae has spoken up about a popular food culture in West Africa. She recently revealed that Ghanaians’ love for boiled eggs is actually rooted in history and economics, not only taste.

Speaking on a new podcast, Amaarae shared that eggs have long been seen as a cheap add-on for protein in that part of the world.

According to her, back in the day, meat was meant for the head of the family alone; therefore, as soon as the mother prepared stew, the bulk of the meat went to the father, while the children ended up getting very small pieces.

The singer stated that to make up for the protein gap for the kids, eggs were usually added to their plates.

“Egg became a cheap add-on for protein,” she said, stressing that chickens were mostly seen as festive luxuries, often reserved for Christmas, back in the day.

Amaarae further noted that this is the reason why eggs have become the norm in Ghana because Ghanaians have never strayed away from the ancient culture to this day.
