Popular Nigerian singer Niniola Apata has said that she chose to remain an independent artist despite receiving multiple offers from record labels. She recently shared that her choice was driven by her desire to protect her artistic freedom.
Speaking during an interview with Hip TV, Niniola revealed that she decided to remain unsigned because she was not comfortable with the deals the record labels kept offering.
According to her, she does not play with her freedom to be creative, so any deal that can potentially take that away from her will surely be frowned upon.
Niniola noted that penning record deals comes with its own advantages and disadvantages, but the cons kept outweighing the pros in her case.

“I have been an independent artist for 10 years now, and it has its pros and cons. After I released my debut single Ibadi in 2014, several record labels reached out, but I was skeptical because I didn’t want anyone to take away my creative freedom.
Even over the years, some deals have come, but I haven’t been comfortable with them,” she said.
Niniola further stated that because her preferred Afrohouse genre of music is still not widely accepted by the popular record labels in Nigeria, staying independent was a no-brainer.
The talented songstress concluded by saying that she has since collaborated with her former manager to launch her own label and push her music.
