Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reiterated the vital role of agriculture in achieving food security, creating jobs, and aiding economic growth. She recently had her say after distributing farm inputs and financial grants to 400 farmers in Delta State under the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Agricultural Support Programme.
Speaking to the press in Asaba, she declared that gardening is a time-honoured tradition that sustained our forefathers in times past, and it can definitely benefit today’s generation if taken seriously.
Remi believes that the “Every Home a Garden” initiative proves the importance of home gardening as a tool to decrease economic discomfort for Nigerian families, so Nigerians should learn to take it seriously.
According to her, growing the food we eat goes a long way towards aiding healthier eating, improving our diet, and guaranteeing constant access to fresh and nutritious produce.
“The beauty of it is that it’s not limited by gender or age. Growing your food helps promote healthier eating, improves your diet, and provides fresh, nutritious produce.
You will agree with me that it is possible for us to grow our own food. The earth is blessed for our sake when you plant, it germinates and yields a great harvest.
The essence of this initiative is to bring us back on track and increase food production across the nation. This is about feeding your family and sharing with your neighbours,” she said.
Announcing that 4 categories of beneficiaries – women, youths, secondary school students, and farming groups – were chosen to receive various farm implements and seedlings as part of the initiative, the wife of President Tinubu urged the selected Nigerians to give their absolute best as they return to the farm.
The First Lady confirmed that she also has a garden behind her house where she regularly plants corn, vegetables and other kinds of crops.
“I hope this gesture encourages you. I urge you to give your best as you return to your farms daily.
I have my own garden behind my house, and soon I will begin harvesting corn, vegetables, and other crops. On a lighter note, I am happy to share with you.
For those who haven’t started, please give it a thought. Let’s join hands to grow more food and move from scarcity to abundance,” she added.
