Popular Afrobeats star, Davido, has spoken up about the overwhelming criticism he keeps facing as a Nigerian artist. He recently revealed that he has a lot of haters because of his privileged upbringing.
Speaking on a new podcast, Davido revealed that his wealthy background could’ve actually stagnated his music career at its early stage if it was popularly known at the time.
According to him, by the time Nigerians knew he was from a rich home, he had already dropped a lot of hit songs, and that delayed realisation shielded him from the hate that would’ve derailed his music career.
“I’m the biggest criticised artist in Nigeria. I mean, I’m on fire and I’ve been on fire for a while. In the beginning, they didn’t know that my dad was rich. So the stigma of a rich kid doing music didn’t end up as crazy as it should have been for me.
People didn’t know my father was rich. It was too late, I already did three hit songs before they found out that my dad had money…
But I just wanted to do music. I didn’t care if I had to become homeless. At that point, that was all I wanted to do. Nothing would stop me,” he said.

The singer, however, revealed that the delayed realisation only saved him for a while, and people eventually started hating him because he has a rich dad.
Davido noted that he can definitely take the criticism because he is fully aware that hate is inevitable as soon as you become popular.
He concluded by saying that despite the hate and backlash he keeps getting, his successful music career is the reason he remains unbothered.
“Over time, people started hating me because my dad is rich. But I keep on dropping good music, and it keeps working out.
It happens to everyone, once you become the biggest in anything, you will get criticised. You are doing an election, people love you and they vote for you. But when you become president, they hate you,” he added.
