The Lagos State Government has clarified that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had no role in the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. This was disclosed by the Governor’s spokesperson, Gboyega Akosile, who emphasized the Governor’s respect for the independence of the legislative arm.
According to Akosile, the decision to remove Obasa was an internal matter of the Lagos State House of Assembly, with no interference from the executive arm. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State also dispelled rumors of political influence, reiterating that the impeachment process was strictly a legislative affair.
Obasa was impeached over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office, which led to the historic election of Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker. Meranda’s emergence marked a significant milestone as she became the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos Assembly.
This development reflects the commitment of the Lagos Assembly to address internal matters independently while upholding accountability and transparency in governance.
