Popular Nigerian singer, Seyi Shay, has come out to say that some of the hymns we sing in church might be doing more harm than good. She recently said that she stopped attending her former church because of the songs they were singing.
Speaking via her Instagram page, Seyi said that she was extremely shocked when one of the leaders at her old church asked the congregation to stop singing contemporary gospel songs, directing them to focus on just hymns and scriptures.
Seyi revealed that she doesn’t understand how anyone can feel blessed by singing hymns that were originally written by slave masters and forced on enslaved Africans during torture and dehumanisation.
“I stopped going to that church. PERIODT. Makes no sense. Do your research! Ignorance is NOT Godly!” she wrote.
The Afrobeats singer disclosed that even though she agrees that not every hymn has such a dark history, a lot of them actually do, hence her decision to avoid signing them.
“In some cases, you’re better off making up your own praise and worship songs based on scripture if you prefer,” he added.
Reacting, while some Nigerian Christians insist that traditional hymns will stay close to their hearts, others agree with Seyi’s call for them to be sidelined.
