The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has officially commenced ward-level registration and enrolment for the National Identification Number (NIN) in Jigawa State, as part of efforts to expand access to the national identity system across Nigeria.
Titansloaded report that the exercise, which began on February 16, 2026, follows a presidential directive instructing the commission to take NIN registration to ward levels nationwide. The initiative is aimed at capturing more eligible Nigerians, particularly women, children, and underserved communities, into the national database.
Mr. Aminu Jakada, NIMC State Coordinator for Jigawa, disclosed that the agency has deployed registration systems and enrolment devices to every ward in the state to facilitate easy access for residents. He emphasised that the registration process is completely free and urged citizens to report any cases of extortion to security authorities or NIMC offices.

“The NIN is now required for essential services including school enrolment, international passport issuance, phone number registration, and bank account opening,” Jakada said. “Obtaining a NIN ensures citizens can access these services seamlessly and participate fully in national identification initiatives.”
The coordinator further called on local, community, and religious leaders to help raise awareness and encourage maximum participation in the exercise. According to him, community engagement is critical to the success of the initiative, particularly in rural areas where access to government services may be limited.
The NIMC initiative reflects a broader national strategy to enhance citizen identification, streamline service delivery, and strengthen governance through accurate demographic data. Officials believe that bringing registration closer to residents’ homes will remove barriers that have historically limited enrolment rates.
As part of the NIMC ward-level NIN registration drive, residents are encouraged to present valid identification and provide accurate personal information to ensure proper enrolment. The exercise is expected to continue until all wards in Jigawa State have been fully covered, with officials committed to a smooth and efficient registration process.
By expanding registration access to the grassroots, NIMC aims to boost Nigeria’s national ID coverage, improve service delivery, and facilitate participation in critical civic and economic activities.
Titansloaded will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on the NIMC ward-level registration exercise across Nigeria, highlighting progress, challenges, and citizen engagement in the national identity program.
