The former Minister of Police Affairs, Adams Maina Waziri, has said that Nigerians went all out to vote for the late Moshood Abiola in 1993 out of military disappointment. He recently shared that the people wanted MKO Abiola in charge just to get rid of military leadership.
Speaking at the Second Posthumous Legacy Colloquium held in Abuja in honour of the late Raymond Dokpesi, Waziri revealed that Abiola and Bashir Tofa were not the initial choices of Nigerians, the people only settled for both politicians to end military rule.
According to him, whenever Nigeria celebrates June 12, the country is not celebrating Abiola and his legacy; we are remembering frustrated Nigerians who got tired of military rule and were forced to vote for a civilian.
“Nigerians, out of disappointment, were forced to vote in 1993 for candidates not of their choice. With due respects, Abiola was not the choice of Nigerians and neither was Bashir Tofa.
The choices of Nigerians were Admu Chiroma, Shehu Musa Yar’adua, Bamanga Tukur, and the rest of them.
So, when we are celebrating June 12, we are celebrating i. Nigerians were tired of military rule, so they were forced to vote to see if they could just ease the military out,” he said.

Reacting to the present state of the nation, Waziri emphasized Raymond Dokpesi’s efforts to help stabilize the Peoples’ Democratic Party.
He condemned Nigerian leaders who keep focusing on distancing themselves from the people, stressing that nobody is safe in the country if the people remain hungry.
He concluded by saying that the present Insecurity challenge proves that life doesn’t mean much in Nigeria anymore.
“For we D37, we decided this day to be called transition day. This event is small but very important to us and important to all of you who have left whatever you are doing to be here.
We have leadership that is focused on itself and distant from the people. There’s no country that can be safe with injustice. With the hunger in the land, we are not safe in this country.
Life has become nothing in this country, insecurity everywhere, and our military has been deployed to all the states, including the FCT. Our military is overstretched.
The mess you see today is created by the politician, and they left it for the military to clean up. The people are suffering, and the government is not listening,” he added.
