The Lagos State Government has arraigned seven individuals before a court in Ikeja over the alleged LAWMA officials assault that occurred during an environmental enforcement operation in the state.
Titansloaded reports that the suspects were brought before a Special Offences (Mobile) Court sitting in Ikeja for allegedly attacking personnel of the Lagos Waste Management Authority while the officials were carrying out their duties.
According to the prosecution, the defendants are facing a five-count charge, including conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, unlawful waste disposal, obstruction of government officials, and assault. Authorities stated that the incident happened during a routine sanitation enforcement exercise aimed at ensuring proper waste management and environmental compliance within the state.
Officials said the LAWMA officials assault occurred when enforcement officers attempted to address violations related to improper waste disposal. The suspects allegedly confronted and attacked the sanitation officials, disrupting the operation and creating tension in the area.
The Lagos State Government noted that the legal action forms part of its broader commitment to enforcing environmental laws and protecting government officials responsible for maintaining sanitation and public health standards across the state.
Authorities also warned that any form of violence or obstruction against sanitation personnel would not be tolerated. They emphasized that the LAWMA officials assault represents a serious violation of Lagos environmental regulations and could attract strict penalties if the accused persons are found guilty.
Environmental enforcement officials stressed that waste management officers often face resistance while carrying out their duties, particularly during operations aimed at tackling illegal dumping and other sanitation-related offences.
Government representatives reiterated that maintaining a clean and healthy environment remains a priority for the state administration. They added that the prosecution of individuals involved in the LAWMA officials assault sends a strong message that the state will continue to uphold environmental laws and ensure that its officials can work without intimidation.
The case was later adjourned by the court to allow for further legal proceedings as the accused persons prepare to face trial.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its determination to strengthen environmental enforcement and urged residents and businesses to cooperate with sanitation authorities in order to sustain a cleaner and safer Lagos.
