The Lagos State Government has cancelled the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta just hours before its scheduled commencement on December 31, 2025, urging residents to usher in the New Year through prayers rather than public celebrations.
Titansloaded reports that the directive was approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and announced in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile. The government encouraged Lagosians to stay at home and engage in personal and collective prayers for the state and the nation.
The annual Greater Lagos Fiesta is traditionally marked by concerts, fireworks, cultural displays, and countdown events across multiple locations in the state. The sudden cancellation surprised residents, entertainers, vendors, and event organisers who had prepared for large turnouts.
In the statement, Governor Sanwo-Olu called on residents to reflect spiritually and pray for peace, prosperity, security, good governance, and overall well-being as Lagos prepares to enter the year 2026. He stressed the importance of unity and hope during the transition into the New Year.
The governor also extended New Year greetings to Lagosians, expressing optimism that 2026 would bring renewed strength, progress, and opportunities for the state despite prevailing challenges.

While no specific reason was provided for the last-minute cancellation, the government described the call to prayer as a deliberate step aimed at spiritual reflection and collective responsibility.
Public reactions to the announcement have been mixed. While some residents welcomed the decision as thoughtful and timely, others expressed concerns over the economic impact on performers, small businesses, and workers who rely on festive events for income.
As the year ends, the Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising the safety, welfare, and long-term development of residents while urging calm and cooperation during the festive period.
