The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has come out to hail the defection of former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, to the All Progressives Congress. He recently called Okowa’s defection a very smart move and a testament to political courage.
Speaking at a monthly media parley held in Abuja today, Wike revealed that he is shocked to find out that the Peoples Democratic Party never anticipated Okowa’s departure, stressing that he already warned members of the party that his exit was looming.
According to him, he applauds Okowa’s decision to join APC and pitch his tent in one place, unlike some others who are hell bent on playing both sides.
“I’m surprised that PDP said they didn’t see it coming. I won’t call the names of the governors. I call them. I said listen, the way things are going, I have warned you people. You said they are governors. I have no problem. Let’s see what will happen,” he said.

Describing the former governor as a seasoned and strategic politician, Wike disclosed that Ifeanyi definitely deserves praise for choosing clarity over duplicity while refusing to pretend or play the double agent role.
“He said he was going to support the President. That’s the crime? But the Chairman of the Board of Trustees – the conscience of the party – adopted Alex Otti for a second tenure. Why are people not commenting about that? He adopted the governor under the Labour Party to go for a second term.
Now this man said, look, I’m not going to do that kind of pretense. I will not be here and go and support him. Smart politician,” Wike said.
The minister concluded by reiterating his stance that PDP will continue to suffer if its leaders don’t start displaying proper leadership to rescue the party.
“If you don’t show leadership, you suffer for it. This is what I’ve been saying. When people talk about the governor of Delta State and his deputy and all his team moved out of PDP to APC. What? What wrong did he do?” he added.
