Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is now just three goals away from equalling Rashidi Yekini’s all-time Nigeria scoring record after scoring twice in Nigeria’s 4‑0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Titansloaded reports that Osimhen scored in the 25th and 47th minutes, taking his international tally to 34 goals. The Galatasaray forward was substituted in the 63rd minute after a brief on-field disagreement with teammate Ademola Lookman.
Osimhen opened the scoring with a tap-in from Akor Adams’ assist and later doubled the lead from Lookman’s pass, marking his 50th appearance for the Super Eagles. His consistent performances continue to cement his status as one of Nigeria’s most prolific forwards.

Rashidi Yekini retired in 1998 as Nigeria’s top scorer with 37 goals in 62 appearances, a record that has stood for decades. Osimhen surpassed Segun Odegbami in March 2025 to become Nigeria’s second all-time top scorer and is steadily closing in on Yekini’s historic mark.
Despite nearing the record, Osimhen emphasised that his priority is helping Nigeria win a fourth AFCON title, saying he focuses on contributing to the team through goals and assists rather than chasing personal milestones.
So far in AFCON 2025, Osimhen has scored three goals, placing him among the tournament’s leading scorers. Nigeria will face the winner of Algeria and DR Congo in the quarter-finals, with Osimhen expected to play a crucial role in their campaign.
Analysts highlight that Osimhen’s form represents a new generation of Nigerian forwards, combining skill, speed, and finishing ability to challenge long-standing national records.
The Super Eagles’ attacking prowess, led by Osimhen, has been a key factor in Nigeria’s dominant performances in the tournament, raising expectations for a deep run in AFCON 2025.
Fans and pundits alike are closely monitoring Osimhen as he edges ever closer to rewriting Nigerian football history and matching Yekini’s legendary achievements.
