Popular Afrobeats singer Davido has said that some Nigerian musicians earn as much as $400,000 for performing at naming ceremonies, birthdays or weddings. He recently sparked an intense discussion among his fans after claiming that artists in Nigeria command very high fees for private events.
Speaking during an interview on the Tap In With TT show, Davido shared that celebrities receiving substantial amounts for personal celebrations like a naming ceremony is a regular occurrence in his country.
Likening the trend to what consistently happens in India, the singer noted that several Nigerian artists actually earn good money for social occasions when the regular shows become scarce.
“You can get booked for a naming ceremony – $400K, It’s just like in India, they always celebrate anything,” he said.

David Adeleke stated that most rich Nigerians don’t hesitate to invite big artists to perform when they have an occasion to organize, and if you’re relevant enough to get the call, they always pay well.
“Once you are doing a wedding or a birthday, especially if you have money, the main thing is to invite a big artist…” he added.
His comments have drawn mixed reactions, with some shocked to see the large figures being discussed for such intimate gatherings, and others criticizing OBO for exaggerating.
It is very common for celebrities in Nigeria to get paid for personal celebrations like naming ceremonies, birthdays and weddings, especially when they have a popular song that Nigerians love to watch them perform.
