Popular comedian and Nollywood actor, Okey Bakassi, has come out to explain why he agreed to be named king of the Umuihuocha Autonomous Community in Imo State. Recall that the entertainer was elected king of the Umuihuocha community on April 28, an announcement that stunned his fans and colleagues across the country.
Speaking at a special presentation ceremony marking the beginning of his reign, Okey Bakassi, who now bears the title “His Royal Highness Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, the Okwe II of Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community,” said that he decided to accept the royal responsibility to uphold his community’s culture of peace and unity.
According to him, the Umuihuocha community is popularly known for resolving disputes, so it is only right for him to continue that trend by not allowing anything that will cause problems for his people.
Okey Bakassi assured the people of a peaceful and successful reign, as long as they keep supporting their son and trust in his ability to rule justly and fairly.
“We pride ourselves as a community that resolves disputes, the anger of a brother does not get to the bone.
If you look here, you will see that I came with my brother who went through the challenge to see the community and support, this is how Umuihuocha used to do things.
Umuihuocha are peaceful people, I won’t bring anything that will cause problems or calamity in this place (Umuihuocha). This promise I give to the people of Umuihuocha,” he said.

The community responded by affirming the comedian’s mandate and announcing that his kingship is fully backed by all 5 villages in the autonomous community, including respected titled men and women.
“We pledge our loyalty and support to him, at all times, as his mandate is that of the entire Umuihuocha by our constitution,” their brief statement read.
Okey Bakassi started out his entertainment journey in the 1990s, before attaining fame through stand-up comedy and TV, particularly for his hilarious performances on the “Night of a Thousand Laughs” stage.
He eventually delved into Nollywood and political service, leading to several movie roles and a stint as Special Assistant on Entertainment to former Imo State governor, Ikedi Ohakim.
