Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has issued a strong warning to residents of Banana Island, calling for strict adherence to state building and environmental guidelines to address recurring flooding issues. During the inauguration of new community projects on Saturday—including an administrative office, a recreational park, and a firefighting truck—Sanwo-Olu underscored the need for Banana Island residents to uphold maintenance standards for these facilities, aiming to secure long-term benefits for future generations.

The governor praised the Banana Island Property Owners and Residents Association (BIPORAL) for its collaboration with state officials and commended outgoing leadership under Frank Aigbogun, as well as the incoming executive led by Abidemi Sonoiki. However, residents raised pressing concerns about severe flooding, particularly on the main access road, which frequently floods due to an inadequate drainage system.

In response, Sanwo-Olu announced that the Lagos Ministry of Environment would conduct a thorough investigation of the drainage issues to implement sustainable solutions. He highlighted that some buildings constructed over water channels have obstructed natural drainage paths, exacerbating the flooding. The governor warned that demolitions might be inevitable if structures continue to block essential water flow, stressing the government’s readiness to take necessary action.

“Cooperate with us to avoid drastic measures. Demolition is a last resort, but we must ensure water flows as intended to prevent flooding,” Sanwo-Olu stated. He assured residents that the Ministry of Environment and the Office of Drainage Services would move forward with efforts to assess and improve the island’s drainage systems.
